Siberian Huskies and Sled Dog Racing in New Zealand
My current project is a pictorial documentary portraying the emotion, energy, speed, strength, fun and gentleness of these beautiful dogs. Including the connection and love they share with their owners, mushers, and families. Ultimately to be published as a hardcovered pictorial book.
The project will cover the arrival of the first Siberian Huskies to New Zealand in 1977, show the characteristics & beauty of the breed, as well as Sled Dog Racing in New Zealand from its beginnings in the early 1980’s to today. It will progress through to portray the diversity of people and dogs that are involved in Sled Dog Racing today.
I have also been given the opportunity to follow a litter of pups from birth to 2 years of age as they develop and mature, attend show events, and train to run in a sled dog race team.
My love for the Siberian Husky began in 2001 when our own little husky puppy came into our lives and was with us for nearly 16 years. Shadow was a tremendous companion, fun, energetic, and true to her breed, a very independent thinker. It is her portrait you see at the top of this page.
I will be living and breathing the life, environment and community that is Siberian Huskies and Sled Dog Racing in New Zealand for the next couple of years. This is an exciting journey that combines 3 of my great loves; the outdoors, the Siberian Husky dog and photography.
Throughout the 2017 and 2018 Sled Dog Racing season I will be attending race meetings in the North Island as well as the Wanaka Sled Dog Festival in the South Island. I am currently a member of the Central Territories Siberian Husky Club (CTSHC) and Ridge Runners Sled Dog Racing Club (RRSDRC). My goal is to connect with other clubs around New Zealand to broaden the coverage of the project, so that it represent the whole of New Zealand.
Images for the documentary book will cover home life, training, equipment, racing, showing, transport and much, much more. The intention is to represent all aspects of Siberian Husky life and Sled Dog Racing in New Zealand. For historical images, I will be looking to connect with people who were part of the community when it all began.
